Some soreness, tightness and pressure are a normal part of recovery after breast augmentation, strongest in the first few days and easing over one to two weeks. Knowing what is expected — and which signs should be checked — makes recovery less worrying. Dr Thomas Colson explains both, and routinely uses a PECS II comfort block at SKMC to keep early recovery as comfortable as possible.
After breast augmentation, most patients describe soreness, tightness and a feeling of pressure rather than sharp pain. It is usually strongest in the first 3 to 5 days and eases noticeably over the first 1 to 2 weeks. A sense of tightness as the tissues stretch can last a little longer.
Discomfort is often slightly stronger when the implant is placed under the muscle (dual-plane) than in a prepectoral pocket, because the muscle is gently lifted — but it settles over the same period.
Before surgery, Dr Colson routinely places a PECS II regional block. It markedly reduces the strong painkillers needed afterwards and supports a more comfortable early recovery. Surgery is performed as a day case at SKMC.
| Sign | Usually normal | Have it assessed if… |
|---|---|---|
| Soreness | Strongest days 1–5, then improving | It is increasing rather than improving after day 5 |
| Swelling | Both breasts, gradually settling | One breast is markedly more swollen, firm or painful than the other |
| Skin | Mild bruising, fading | Spreading redness, warmth, or fever |
| Sensation | Tingling or altered nipple feeling, often temporary | It is associated with spreading redness or discharge |
| General | Tired for a few days | Calf pain or breathlessness — seek urgent care |
It is always reasonable to have a concern assessed rather than wait. The SKMC team can review symptoms, and Dr Colson can examine the breast and arrange imaging if needed. Reassurance is part of good care.
New pain or firmness that appears long after a settled recovery is worth assessing. It can reflect capsular contracture — the scar capsule around the implant tightening — or, less often, implant rupture.
Both are diagnosed by examination and imaging, and can be corrected as a breast implant revision when needed.
In line with UAE Department of Health guidelines on modesty and medical advertising, breast surgical results are not published online. Outcomes relevant to your own anatomy are reviewed privately during your consultation, alongside a Crisalix 3D simulation of your planned result.
Consultations with Dr Thomas Colson are performed exclusively at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, within the SEHA network. If pain is increasing, one-sided, or you simply want reassurance, the breast can be examined and, where needed, imaged.
